The Local History Database, maintained by the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library System, contains items of local interest from a variety of sources. It is updated daily by the Browning Family Foundation and the Library.
Charles Browning's "Browning People Study" is a primary source of data on the Local History Database. Over a forty-year span, Mr. Browning clipped items of local interest, created index cards, and filed them alphabetically. The 537,000 index cards which comprised the Browning People Study were scanned, indexed, and made available for the internet in 1999. This type of local history information continues to be created and updated by the Browning Family Foundation with the addition of several thousand index cards annually over the last decade.
In addition, the Local History Database includes articles from archives of the Evansville Press, which ceased publication as a daily newspaper in December 1998. The Evansville Vanderburgh and Willard Libraries became owners of the Evansville Press archives in 1999. EVPL scans and indexes articles from the archives dating from 1936 through 1998 featuring local events, people and organizations. Scanning and indexing these articles began in 1999, and in the last decade, the EVPL staff added over 250,000 articles from the newspaper archives to this database. They continue to add articles to update the Local History Database on a regular basis.
